British sprinter Zharnel Hughes is confident about the current state of global sprinting, even after Usain Bolt`s retirement, as he prepares to contend for a medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The 30-year-old Hughes is set to compete in the 100m, 200m, and the 4x100m relay in Japan. This follows his bronze medal win in the 100m at the last World Championships held in Budapest two years ago.
This year`s fastest 100m time belongs to Jamaica`s Kishane Thompson, who clocked 9.75 seconds, with American Kenny Bednarek also achieving a sub-9.8s performance.
Hughes, whose personal best this season is 9.91 seconds, believes that the top sprinters are very closely matched, and success in securing medals will ultimately come down to mental fortitude and composure.
«I believe sprinting has, in a way, recovered its strength since Bolt`s departure. I certainly think it`s in a healthy position,» the British athlete shared. «The times being recorded have been impressive enough.»
«We`ve consistently been achieving times in the 9.7s and 9.8s. Of course, Bolt and athletes like Yohan Blake and Tyson Gay reached a different level, running in the 9.5s and 9.6s, respectively.»

Last summer, at the Olympic Games in Paris, Hughes unfortunately missed out on an individual medal. He was eliminated in the 100m semi-finals and later withdrew from the 200m before the heats due to a hamstring strain.
Despite this, he remains optimistic about Tokyo, stating: «I`m not imposing any undue pressure or expectations on myself. My primary focus is simply advancing through the rounds. It`s easy to get ahead of oneself, and I`m actively working to avoid that.»
